SMU Counseling
If you’re reading this, we want you to know we are here for you.
We are a community of compassionate professionals who seek to support students of all backgrounds. We embrace the diversity of our students and strive to meet you where you are. We also aim to break the stigma of mental health in our society and let our students know it is okay to ask for help. In many cultures and family systems, asking for help can indicate weakness. Instead, we want to emphasize that asking for help is an act of courage and strength. When we find ourselves in a scary place, as Mr. Fred Rogers would say, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
Know that we are all here to provide a safe and non-judgmental place for you. We know the idea of Counseling can feel daunting and uncertain. But the Counseling process can be a journey of change, connection, and healing. We offer you a listening ear and an encouraging voice in times of struggle and hardship. We understand it is often hard to find the people who can truly see you. We want you to feel seen and heard.
You matter. Your voice matters. Your story matters and it is our honor to take part in your story.
In our time together, please know you can be yourself. No script, no plan, no pre-requisite required. We hope to build a positive relationship with you in this special time of your life. While Counseling can be serious at times, did you know there is laughter and lightness, too?
In helping our students with mental health challenges, we also help educate students on mood disorders such as anxiety & depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 1 in 5 U.S. adults will experience a mood disorder at some time during their lives. You do not have to be defined or be confined by mental illness. We will empower you to find new ways to be healthy and well.
Also, know there are so many ways we support our students.
Do you feel alone? We are here.
Do you feel rejected? We are here.
Do you feel sad? We are here.
Are you anxious? We are here.
Are you overwhelmed? We are here.
Are you stuck? We are here.
Are you in an unhealthy relationship? We are here.
Did someone hurt you? Did you experience something unexpected? Or did life just happen? And you just need someone to talk to?
Guess what? WE ARE HERE.
With love,
