Right now, life might feel heavy! Like you’re lost, unsure of your place, or just trying to get through the day. If that’s where you are, know this: you’re not alone. I’ve been there too.
I’m Souleymane Bah, and my life has been a journey of constant adaptation: across places, cultures, and challenges. I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but I grew up moving through different parts of Africa before returning to the U.S. With every move, I carried the weight of feeling like I didn’t quite belong. I wasn’t fully African in Africa, nor did I feel fully American when I returned. In every place, I stood out, and it felt like I was searching for a home that didn’t exist.
But through all the changes, I learned something powerful: the art of adaptation. When life takes you to new and unfamiliar places, immerse yourself in the moment. Live as the people around you live. Respect their culture. By doing this, not only will you connect more deeply with others, but you’ll also find peace within yourself. The real secret to that peace? It’s gratitude: being thankful for what you have, even when life feels overwhelming.
College can be lonely, especially when you’re battling feelings of anxiety, depression, or just not fitting in. It’s easy to focus on what’s missing, on how different you feel or how tough life seems. But here’s the truth I’ve discovered: gratitude is the key to unlocking happiness. Even in the hardest moments, when you focus on what’s good, no matter how small, you begin to see light in the darkness.
If you’re struggling right now, feeling overwhelmed, out of place, or like life is just too much; remember this: you’re not alone. Adapting takes time, and you don’t need to have it all figured out today. But I promise you, the more you focus on what’s good, the more peace you’ll find, even in the midst of chaos.
You are loved, and you matter. Even in your hardest moments, there are people who care about you and want to see you thrive. So embrace where you are, even if it’s difficult. Happiness doesn’t come from having everything; it comes from being grateful for what you do have, no matter how small. You’re stronger than you think, and you will make it through.
