If you’re reading this, you matter to me, even if we’ve never spoken.
As we navigate the bustling halls, verdant quads, and cozy corners of Duke University, it's easy to become enveloped in the whirlwind of our own lives. Yet, amidst the rush from class to class, assignment to assignment, and social event to social event, I want to take a moment to acknowledge something profound: each and every one of you.
In the blur of our daily routines, it's easy to forget the intricate tapestry of lives that surrounds us. But I see you—all of you. From the strangers I pass by on my way to class, to the familiar faces I share meals and conversations with, each person contributes to the vibrant mosaic of our campus community.
I often ponder the unique stories, dreams, and struggles that reside within each of us. Every smile exchanged, every laugh shared, and every word spoken leaves an indelible mark on the collective experience of being a Duke student. And it's this rich tapestry of humanity that makes our time here so incredible.
Yet, amidst the laughter and camaraderie, I am aware that some among us may be silently battling their own thoughts and inner critics. Mental health struggles can be isolating, and it's all too easy to feel like we're navigating the darkness alone. But I want you to know that you are not alone—not now, not ever.
To anyone who may be grappling with their mental health or contemplating the unthinkable, I implore you to reach out. Whether it's to a friend, a mentor, a counselor, or even a stranger, please know that there are people here who care deeply about you and want to support you through your darkest moments.
Because the truth is, your presence matters. Your smile brightens someone's day, your laughter lifts someone's spirits, and your mere existence adds immeasurable value to our shared experience at Duke. I notice the students who regularly sit near me in class, though we may have never talked. I notice the people whose schedules line up with mine, and who I regularly walk slightly in front of or behind on the way to classes. I notice the person who gets coffee around the same time as me every Sunday afternoon. The thought of any one of you not being here would impact me and is a reminder of the immense impact each of us has on one another, even if we may never have spoken.
So, please, if you're struggling, don't suffer in silence. Open up, reach out, and let someone in. Together, we can create a campus community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. And together, we can let everyone at Duke know that they are not just another student, but someone a part of everyone’s tribe in some way.
