If you’re reading this, defeat comparison.

We are constantly comparing ourselves to others in college. We think others who are seemingly more liked or successful or smart or put together are superior to us. We let these unsubstantiated thoughts drag us down; we allow comparison to do its job and thieve us of our joy.

Despite the good grades I’ve received in college thus far, I’m frustrated when I find out that there were peers who outperformed me. Despite an enjoyable weekend with my friends, I’m disappointed when I hear about other friends who spent their weekend in a more extravagant way. Despite my favorable mental health, I’m disheartened when I think others around me are squeezing more out of life than me.

The funny thing is, the people we compare ourselves to aren’t usually imposing comparison on us; they’re just trying to live their best lives as we are too. Everyone is on their own path, and everyone’s life is uniquely beautiful. We’ve all been created for a purpose; there’s a reason you are you and I am me.

When I realized that life is not a competition between myself and everyone else about “who can live the best life”, I learned to be satisfied by my own wins, strengths, and joys. I discovered who I am, what fulfills me, and what truly matters to me. Life stopped being a game of how I can please others and positively boost my public or social perception. I learned to love and appreciate myself and the life I’ve been blessed with.

Comparison doesn’t simply go away on command - even with the previous truths acknowledged, I still find myself in waves of comparison. Yet, every day, I do my best to remain genuine to myself and celebrate myself and others. That way, I am working towards defeating comparison and living free from its peril.
