If you’re reading this, your people are out there
When I was in high school, I felt a bit different. I had people I cared about and who cared about me, but there was always something off. As time went on, I wasn’t sure if the connections I had made were grounded in shared values. We were very different in ways I hadn’t expected. Many of the relationships were so surface-level; they didn’t understand the things that made me giddy or the things that I truly cared about. We’d gossip and talk about parties, but it was never broader. They were “friends to have,” but not the kind of friends who could offer a genuine connection. I didn’t feel the sense of belonging that I had hoped for.
When I arrived at college in the fall of my freshman year, I looked forward to meeting new people. Coming to Vanderbilt felt like a fresh start. Finding my person wasn’t immediate. It happened over way too many sushi dinners, tiny moments of joy, and late-night conversations that made me realize how much she “got” me. She was worth the wait. Every relationship I’ve made has changed me, shaped me, and taught me lessons about who I am and what I want to prioritize in life. My friendship with her reminded me that real connection happens when you are honest about what matters to you. When you open up, flaws and all, and they love you even more because of it.
She keeps me grounded, especially when I get in my head and overthink everything. She’s the one that sets me straight and who tells me I got this. She pulls me back when I drift away. She’s the one screaming for me in the crowd.
If you’re reading this, it’s okay to let go of friendships that don’t serve you. Personal growth often entails making space for new people who do align with your values and bring you joy. Even though that process can feel lonely at times, it’s in those spaces that you make room for the good ones who will truly see and support you.
Finding the people who feel like home takes time. Finding your people is worth the wait. Your people are out there.
