If you're reading this, remember that you are seen, you are valued, and you are never alone!

With LOVE...

As I reflect on my journey through higher education, I am struck by the many challenges and triumphs that have shaped my path. My name is Dr. Christian Barrientos, and as someone who has navigated both the student and educator roles, I want to share a message of support, understanding, and resilience—a message that I hope will resonate with each of you.

Mental health is an issue that touches all of us, yet it is often surrounded by silence. The pressures of academic success, the uncertainties of the future, and the internal battles we face can be overwhelming. Throughout my own journey, I have grappled with feelings of imposter phenomenon—those moments when I questioned whether I truly belonged in the spaces. Whether I was truly deserving of the opportunities before me. These doubts were not easy to confront, but they were a significant part of my story. As a higher education professional, I see these elements still be true for myself and others as we strive to silence our negative self-talk.

What helped me move forward was the courage and willingness to talk about my concerns and apprehensions. I reached out to professors who believed in me, to classmates who shared similar experiences, and to groups that offered support and understanding. Through these conversations, I learned that I was not alone in my feelings of doubt and that many others had walked similar paths. These connections reminded me that the "L's" in life are not failures. They are lessons. They are opportunities to grow, to learn, and to become stronger. It provides us the opportunity to reflect and try again!

Imposter phenomenon, like many challenges we face, is not a sign of inadequacy. It is a reflection of the high standards we set for ourselves and the weight of the expectations we carry. But these feelings do not define us. What defines us is how we respond to them—how we seek support, how we build connections, and how we continue to learn and grow despite our doubts.

I want to encourage each of you to reach out, to share your story, and to connect with others. The stigma surrounding mental health is a barrier we must all work together to dismantle. You are not alone in your struggles, and it is through community, support, and understanding that we find the strength to move forward. IfYoureReadingThis is an incredible resource, offering a space where voices can be heard, and where connections can be made. I am honored to contribute to this community and to stand alongside each of you in this journey.

Remember, it is more than okay to not have all the answers. It is okay to ask for help. And it is okay to take time for yourself. Your mental health is just as important as any other aspect of your life and taking care of it is not a sign of weakness but a testament to your strength. Allow yourself to seek help and guidance, as I've learned over the years that it's easier to succeed when you're part of a team than it is to be on an island by yourself.

Please know that you are seen, you are valued, you are not alone, and most importantly YOU ARE WORTHY. The road ahead may be difficult, but together, we can navigate it with resilience and hope.

With heartfelt support,

Dr. Christian Barrientos, Clemson University
