If you're reading this, there is a community out there for you.

It takes time, and it does take some effort, but it is one of the most rewarding things about your college experience and, frankly, life in general. Take it from a transfer student who was at a small private school where nothing ever truly felt right.

There were days when it felt like I was a failure, and all I could do was disappoint those around me. Especially myself. It hurt to see people I knew thriving at college when I felt like I wasn't. I hope you haven't had to relate to that, but I know, more than likely, some of you have. Even once at Clemson, a place that I knew felt right, finding that community took time. I was basically doing freshman year twice. But through all the uncertainty and fear, I'm here to tell you to trust the process. You are likable. You are funny. You are caring. You have qualities worthy of friendship and being loved.

Remember I mentioned that it takes some effort? I can't stress enough the importance of getting involved. For me, it was Alpha Phi Omega and Solid Green, and involvement looks different to everyone. The more you give to the people and community that Clemson has to offer, the more it will give back to you. Clemson is known for its community for a reason.

Use the resources they offer, especially those you have taken the time to cultivate. This way, when you need it, they will be there to have your back. Nobody's life is perfect, and there will be days when you still feel like it's not enough. I remembered one-time last year, I had a good day in class. I even saw people I knew on campus, but the moment I got back to my apartment, everything suddenly felt wrong. So, on the verge of a panic attack, I took a trip to the building next door to talk with new and old friends. When I opened the door, they were doing homework on the couch, just laughing together. It was exactly what I needed at the moment. The peace and feeling of belonging that I experienced in that moment is out there for you.

A symptom of being a transfer student is that I feel like I'm never satisfied, always looking for more connections and people to do life with. That being said, if you need someone to talk to, I'm happy to be that person because I believe that you are here for a reason and that you are reading this letter for a reason. So…if you're reading this, you belong.
